Dave and Heather Ashley – “Success lies on the other side of fear.”

What do a former fighter pilot and a health coach with an MBA have in common? Quite a lot, apparently. Dave and Heather Ashley—husband and wife and founders of Ashley Property Group—talk about their unusual and, at times, hazardous career paths, as well as the pleasures and challenges of working with your spouse. Listen on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher and TuneIn
  • “I want to be here for my grandchildren and I want to help others be here for their grandchildren and be strong healthy as well. Because it’s all well and good being with your grandchildren, but you want to be able to run around with them and not be limited in your physical ability.”
  • “I’ve always been quite a driven person, always liked physical activities—I used to run to school and home—and I used to see fighter jets flying over my house and I was like, ‘That’s what I want to do.'”
  • Quite a few of my friends and colleagues have been killed in training accidents, and in combat operations you see the reality of war and you realise life is super, super fragile. So, make it happen. One guy said to me, ‘Life is not a dress rehearsal.’ This changed my life.”
  • “So many people think, ‘My goodness, how can you do that?’ and, actually, we did it, we proved it was possible and I’m so glad we did because we’ve got all these amazing experiences—we got to travel to so many places we wouldn’t have otherwise, so it’s opened up a whole new perspective. If we hadn’t done it, if we’d been a bit scared… pushing through that fear is where the success is.”
  • “As I pulled the handle for the ejector seat there was no delay at all and wa-bang! I felt my back break on the way out and then as I hit the airflow, my mask and visor came off; it felt like someone had hit me in the face with a bat. I shattered my eye socket and thought I’d lost my right eye. It quickly went from normality to broken back, blood everywhere, can’t see out my right eye, in a parachute, going ‘I’m not quite sure what happened there.'”
  • “Food is so important, just in terms of what we put into ourselves affects the thoughts we have and how we move our bodies.”
  • “Sleep is the foundation of everything. A lot of my clients are entrepreneurs and business owners, and they’re so concentrated and highly successful in all other areas of their life, but they neglect their health.”
  • “I’m quite addicted to the sunrise. I’m always up early, swimming in the sea or our running or cycling. That for me is a really good time because it’s quiet and I can get quite a lot done and just focus, focus, focus.”
  • “A mentor’s a huge help. We’ve both got our own mentors.”
  • “The Wim Hof Method is about cold immersion therapy, breath work, and it’s absolutely incredible. My routine in the morning is I do Wim Hof breathing, which is a special technique which has tons of benefits behind it. I’m his number one fan!”
  • “My definition of success would be contentment. If you’re able to get up in the morning in a happy place and you’ve got a plan for the day that’s going to lift you and the people around you and you’re healthy and strong, then I think you’re pretty much succeeding in life.”
